  2. stop visiting dubious sites, and run ad-aware to make sure it’s not software on your computer that is calling them.

You can of course block popups in firefox or IE in the options, however so many sites use pop ups legitimately that it can destroy your surfing enjoyment. eg a lot of audios/videos won’t play if the blocker is on, and it can stop any scripts working, things like online banking etc.

  3. Download and Install a HOSTS File from here

    http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

Also have your computer checked for malware here:

    Simple to do really.

  5. Hi Andrea,

1st… don’t listen to anyone telling you to download anything else. There is a pop-up blocker within Internet Explorer which can be access by clicking on Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > and you will see a check box for pop up blocker…

However, most likely you do not have a pop-up problem.. you have a malware problem.

You’ve mentioned that you have McAfee. This is great! owever, the bad news is that most likely McAfee has either been disabled and/or you didn’t keep it up to date and/or you need to upgrade to a complete suite that includes all the bells and whistles such as antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc… (not just antivirus). So the first thing you should do is to go into the McAfee settings and a) make sure it is enable b) force a manual update (if it updates then reboot and run a complete scan). c) make sure its a complete suite and if it is not upgrade it, reboot, complete a scan.

I would also suggest you do a web based scan from http://housecall65.trendmicro.com which will attempt to identify and remove malware without having you download any dangerous programs (aside from a small active x web plugin). This is a good way to double check that your scanner has not been disabled (though it still may appear to be on).

    Good Luck!
