jeebus and vale — good points!

Yes, I have been noticing that! Actually, I just commented to my dad the other night about how I’d never seen a commercial for Porsche before this one that they’ve been airing lately (I know it’s not luxury clothing, but it’s been a definite increase in advertising luxury everything) and he made a good point–these things are becoming more and more accessible to people based on income and payment plans that are available, and in the case of luxury clothes, people can always just put it on a credit card and pay it off later.

I am doing a report on this topic and I wanted to get an idea of what adults think about this. feel free to share your thoughts.

No, advertising isn’t to blame. We always like to point the finger at somebody for all of our problems but the fact is we are responsible for our own bodies and how we choose to take care of it. With children, it’s up to their parents to teach them how to make good food choices and provide them with the right kinds of foods. Even the cafeteria food in some schools is very unhealthy. The only ones that can make sure kids are eating right is their parents. Once kids are old enough to have their own money and means of transportation, parents can’t always supervise their food choices anymore, so they have to be responsible for their own choices at that time.

I have eight different channels covering the olympics and at any given time more than half are in commercial mode. Has the Olympic committee become so greedy and corrupt that they must plague us so? From now on I will just go to Youtube for hilites.

Try to realize it’s not exactly Olympic Committee (VANOC) that has decided to "plague you so", it is also the networks who choose to do so. Everybody makes more money with more advertisements.

How has the advent of devices such as Tivo or DVR recorders affected your trade?

Are you doing anything to combat them?

Lately I’ve noticed pop-up ads during my shows which is rather annoying.

I can’t remember the last time I watched a television commercial and I couldn’t be happier with my television viewing experience lately.

I’m sure advertisers don’t care for consumers like myself but I save so much time it’s ridiculous.

I work in local broadcast TV. I scan articles now & then, but don’t track it; so this is from memory:

DVRs have not yet made the impact that everyone predicted, for 2 reasons:

1. The majority of time-shifted programming is NEVER watched, anyway! Last I heard, the figure was around 75%. So, most people who weren’t in front of their TVs when the program (& commercials) were live, still didn’t see it, just like they wouldn’t have if time-shifting didn’t exist.

2. Some 60% of DVR viewers DON’T skip most commercials, even though they have the technology. Plus, some will REWIND and watch a commercial that catches their eye!

So, you are currently the exception. Not to mention, there are still plenty of people viewing programs (and commercials) in real time; enough to subsidize your time-shifted, commercial-free viewing. That doesn’t mean nobody is thinking about the future: Phillips recently unveiled a system that would allow viewers to pay to skip commercials on their TV (no pay, no skip!) I know there are stories about it out there, but I haven’t bothered to read up on it yet; because I’m not convinced that’s the way to go.
