Killing Us Softly 3: Advertising’s Image of Women
http://www.mediaed.org
Jean Kilbourne’s pioneering work helped develop and popularize the study of gender representation in advertising. Her award-winning Killing us Softly films have influenced millions of college and high school students across two generations and on an international scale. In this important new film, Kilbourne reviews if and how the image of women in advertising has changed over the last 20 years.
With wit and warmth, Kilbourne uses over 160 ads and TV commercials to critique advertising’s image of women. By fostering creative and productive dialogue, she invites viewers to look at familiar images in a new way, that moves and empowers them to take action.

Oh yeah one more …
Oh yeah one more thing…
If all you guys out there only want to watch ads because of hot girls, you are really sick. They are not selling women, they’re selling their product.

Jcorelettdc: you …
Jcorelettdc: you are absolutley horrible. Women do not deserve to be portrayed like that. You have absolutley no clue at all because you just think they’re hot, sexy, and good looking. Your just a guy who doesn’t care. If you cared you wouldn’t be so sexist.
Anyways great video. I saw this is school today and figured I would comment. This really shows everything wrong with all these sexist advertisements.

Get over it Jean. …
Get over it Jean. Go and get laid! Women in advertising are hot! They may be impossibly beautiful but who wants to see a not so perfect woman advertise their favourite product?! Anyone with any sense knows as much and takes these images with a pinch of salt. Do something worthwhile.

Like women don’t …
Like women don’t have standards. Wah wah, I don’t live up to the standards of the opposite sex therefore they are bad people, or it’s some kind of media conspiracy out to get me. If we destroy the media and culture, all humans would default to randomly selecting a partner since biology doesnt impose any standards or competition.
Sadly there are always going to be people who dont fair well in which ever standards are around, and sadly theyre always going to about it.

You can’t even spell let alone recognize an argument. So, I get slammed because I praise Jean Kilbourne’s film? I never even commented about anything you wrote here, but what does that matter, right? Any opportunity to call me names is good enough for you. You’re pathetic.

Jean does a great …
Jean does a great job of pointing out the ways that women in our society are depicted and treated differently than men. Yet many people continue to believe that sexism is dead and gone in our culture. Nice job Jean! Keep it up!!

You’re totally …
You’re totally right, advertising does magnify. It magnifies everything from how flavorful something is, to how fun it is, how well it cleans. I think advertisers need to fight against sexist stereotypes, if anything because it’s so cliche and not at all creative or interesting to watch. It’s good to be having these conversations though, especially with people who are creating the ads.

I for one would be interested to see a genuine and thoughtful discussion between advertising professionals and critics of advertising.

She’s not arguing …
She’s not arguing that there’s a “conspiracy”. Like other advertisers I’ve talked to, you seem to think that you are not responsible for the implicit and explicit social messages contained in your advertising. As one advertiser put it, “we asked 14 year old boys what would make them buy Axe, and they said ‘if it got them hot women’ so we made an ad that showed Axe getting you hot women”. He argues that ads just reflect society, but they also perpetuate and magnify these norms.

their risk of suicide about triples. At least an ugly woman can blame it on genes.
When male fail to perform, they’re called loser, not a *real* man, a bum, a failure.
The drive for men to perform can be much more destructive than the drive for women to be beautiful.
Even ugly women can find companionship. The washouts at the male role are mostly rejected by women, castout from society to a solitary pitiful existence leading to invisible misery and suicide.
