What degree would I need for the Creative Department in an advertising agency?

I am currently taking classes for a graphic design major. I am wanting to work in an advertising firm eventually and am wondering which degree would be better to achieve this goal. Also, what is the outlook for graphic designers/ creative department?

Definitely take advertising or marketing courses, as a minor if you can. I have worked with designers who could make pretty ads or web sites but missed the whole point of what we were trying to sell. I think it’s easier to get in to more places as a graphic designer than as a marketing grad. You can also freelance easier.

The degree that you need to be in for that particular job is either Graphic Design, as you are in now, or CADD (computer aided drafting and design.) If you choose to do one of those majors, I would recommend taking classes in the other. Some marketing or business classes wouldn’t hurt either.

As for the outlook… not quite sure. It would really depend on the location and the industry you want to work in.

Interactive is the best field to get into for creatives. Flash designers are in high demand
